Kinky Curly Hair Extensions

Kinky hair, also known as afro-textured hair, is perhaps the curly hair type that requires the most specific hair care and grooming. This curl type is most common with gents of African heritage, hence the “afro-textured” name, although this curl type can also occur in guys with other heritages.

Kinky hair is the most delicate of curl types because the hair strands (i.e. individual hairs) grow with a very irregular surface, meaning that a kinky-haired strand will have the least tensile strength and will be prone to breakage (i.e. the hair strands will break upon manipulating them too much)

In kinky hair, the direction and pattern of the curl is defined as inconsistent or non-existent, because it can change several times down the strand. Not only does the pattern of the curl change as you go down the strand, but the direction of the curl can change too. Kinky hair is also very springy, and can appear 1/4 as long as it really is.  The springiness of the hair in combination with the changing curl pattern is what causes the fold in on itself and easily tangle when worn in a natural state. That is why stretching the hair and protective styling is very helpful in growing kinky hair to longer lengths. We interrupt the tangling process, and beat the hair at its own game.

kinky-curly hair refers to hair with a tighter curl pattern, be it inconsistent or consistent. All of the men pictured above have kinky curly hair. Some curlier than kinky; some kinkier than curly. You might find that you have multiple types of hair on your head.

A person with either or both "types" of hair can play up the kinkiness or the curliness of the hair. Depending on how you want your hair to look, you can either enhance or mask the curl pattern, giving it the appearance of a different "type of hair."

Twist-outs, braid outs, bantu knot-outs, and use of gel and products are examples of styles that enhance or create a curl pattern.
